Are you ready for R.I.D.E this winter?

What is R.I.D.E. in Ontario?

If you are driving anywhere in Ontario this holiday season, you should be aware of the R.I.D.E program. Known as Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere, this initiative is run by police to catch drunk drivers on Ontario's roads. Drunk driving is more common during the holidays, where people are inclined to consume more alcohol than normal. Nevertheless, driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) is illegal in Canada and can cause significant penalties, such as fines, licence suspension and even prison sentences.

Today, R.I.D.E. is a very widespread program, involving police officers and volunteers across the province. These officials wait alongside entrances and exits to highways, and will stop drivers that they suspect are intoxicated or driving over the limit.

If their suspicion has been confirmed, they will test you using a breathalyzer. This tool measures your blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) using a sample of your breath. Because driving under the influence can lead to life-threatening accidents, Canadian law is strict on blood-alcohol concentration, with a level of 0.08ml or 80 milligrams being deemed the maximum legal limit. Any figure higher than this might result in a criminal charge of impaired driving.

How to Avoid Being Charged with Impaired Driving

So, how can you make sure to avoid being charged by R.I.D.E.:

  • Do not drink and drive. This is a very simple rule that can easily be forgotten in the holiday season.
  • Consider alternative transportation if you have consumed alcohol. Public transit operates within many of Ontario's cities and is an affordable way to get home safely. Arranging a taxi is also an alternative option if you live in more isolated areas or have to travel far in the dark. Remember, spending several extra dollars today could avoid a hefty fine later. If not, consider calling a friend or family member to give you a ride home.
  • If you are sober and choose to drive friends and family home, be vigilant on the road. Darker nights, snow and ice make driving conditions hazardous in the winter. Make sure any passengers are safely in the car and are not able to distract you.
